The Baltic Sea: Estimates of total fisheries removals 1950–2007
نویسنده
چکیده
The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) reports to the general public fisheries ‘landings’ not ‘total removals’ for north-east Atlantic waters. Thus, public data do not include all anthropogenic removals, including discards. We reconstructed total removals for the nine countries (Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia and Sweden) fishing in the Baltic Sea by estimating their unreported removals. Estimated total removals of 53.5 million tonnes are 30% higher than the 41.3 million tonnes ICES reports publicly for 1950–2007. During 2000–2007, total removals

We estimated the total marine and brackish-water fisheries catches from the Baltic Sea Large Marine Ecosystem, from 1950-2007, taken by Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia and Sweden. Using the ICES electronic catch database as the ̳reported data‘ baseline, we added several IUU (Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated) catch components: ̳adjustments‘ (data source a...
متن کاملDistribution and activity of pelagic fish – acoustic studies in the Baltic Sea
Fisheries agencies around the Baltic Sea use hydroacoustics to assess stock sizes of herring and sprat. These assessments rely on the assumption that the acoustic properties of Baltic clupeids are the same as North Sea herring. This may lead to biased results, as system-specific differences in salinity and fish fat content may influence acoustic target strength. The acoustic properties of the B...
متن کاملManaging Baltic Sea fisheries under contrasting production and predation regimes: ecosystem model analyses.
Based on an earlier published ecosystem model, we have explored possible effects of different management scenarios for the Baltic Sea. The scenarios include an oligotrophication of the system, a drastic increase in the number of seals, and changes in the fishery management. From these simulations we conclude that fisheries, seals, and eutrophication all have strong and interacting impacts on th...
متن کاملOriginal Article Does fisheries management incentivize non-compliance? Estimated misreporting in the Swedish Baltic Sea pelagic fishery based on commercial fishing effort
Fisheries management agencies and fishing industry representatives depend on reliable estimates of fish biomass and mortality for the determination of sustainable catch levels. Lack of data or misreporting may be reasons for unreliable stock assessment, which, in turn, may result in advice that does not reflect the availability of fisheries resources. It has been suggested that the mixed pelagi...
متن کاملBy-Catch of Grey Seals (Halichoerus grypus) in Baltic Fisheries—A Bayesian Analysis of Interview Survey
Baltic seals are recovering after a population decline. The increasing seal stocks cause notable damage to fisheries in the Baltic Sea, with an unknown number of seals drowning in fishing gear every year. Thus, sustainable seal management requires updated knowledge of the by-catch of seals--the number of specimens that die in fishing gear. We analyse the by-catch of grey seals (Halichoerus gryp...
